Modern engineering relies on optimizing magnetic flux density and magnetic field stability under load. Sintered Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) features a tetragonal crystalline structure of Nd2Fe14B, which provides very high uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This allows for high saturation magnetization ($J_s \approx 1.6 \, \text{T}$) and high energy product ($BH_{\text{max}}$ up to $55 \, \text{MGOe}$).

1. Anti-Corrosion Surface Treatements & Coating Technologies

Because of the high chemical activity of the neodymium-rich phase at grain boundaries, NdFeB is naturally prone to oxidation. We address this issue by applying multilayer galvanic coatings and specialized barrier laminations:

  • Nickel-Copper-Nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni): A triple-layer metallic coating that protects against ambient humidity. This coating provides excellent resistance to corrosion and is suitable for most general industrial applications.
  • Epoxy Resin Coating: Provides a robust chemical barrier against salt spray, high humidity, and weak acid exposure. It also offers electrical insulation up to 500V.
  • Rubber Coated Assemblies (Santoprene): An elastomeric barrier that provides high friction coefficients, prevents surface scratching, and protects the internal brittle magnet from physical impacts.
  • Zinc (Zn) plating: An economical option for applications that are protected from direct exposure to corrosive agents.

Engineering Breakthrough: Grain Boundary Diffusion (GBD)

By diffusing heavy rare earth elements (specifically Dysprosium, Dy, or Terbium, Tb) along the crystalline grain boundaries, we increase the magnet's intrinsic coercivity ($H_{cj}$). This process reduces the use of expensive heavy rare earth metals inside the core grains, helping to lower production costs while maintaining high magnetic performance.

2. Thermal Stability Grades & Structural Engineering

As operating temperatures increase, the magnet's remanence ($B_r$) and coercivity ($H_{cj}$) experience reversible losses. If temperatures exceed the material's maximum operating threshold, irreversible thermal demagnetization occurs. What causes irreversible thermal demagnetization in high-grade NdFeB magnets?
Irreversible thermal demagnetization occurs when the magnet is heated beyond its maximum operating temperature limit. Thermal energy disrupts the alignment of the magnetic domains within the crystal structure. Once this temperature threshold is passed, the magnetic domains lose their alignment, resulting in a permanent loss of flux that cannot be recovered without remagnetizing the material.
How do you select the correct coating for subsea or marine applications?
For marine or high-moisture environments, standard nickel plating is usually insufficient because pinhole defects can allow salt water to penetrate. We recommend rubber-coated (Santoprene) magnets or stainless steel encapsulation. These options provide a durable barrier that protects the inner neodymium core from corrosive salt spray.
Why is Grain Boundary Diffusion (GBD) preferred over traditional alloy mixing?
GBD concentrates heavy rare earths (Dysprosium or Terbium) at the boundaries between the crystal grains, rather than distributing them throughout the entire grain structure. This selectively increases the magnet's coercivity (resistance to demagnetization) while preserving high remanence (magnetic field strength) in the core, all while reducing material costs.
