Sintered Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets are inherently vulnerable to atmospheric and chemical oxidation. The underlying structure consists of ferromagnetic Nd2Fe14B grains surrounded by a highly reactive, neodymium-rich grain boundary phase. When exposed to humidity, salt mist, or acid-base conditions, the Nd-rich phase undergoes rapid galvanic corrosion, leading to magnetic performance degradation and physical structural decay (known as crumbling).
